Patient displaying confident smile after All-on-X implant treatment at SmilesHUB in Oakbrook Terrace

If you’re missing most or all of your teeth and you’re looking for a permanent alternative to traditional dentures, All-on-X from Dr. Sushant Dhadwal and Dr. Ritu Dhadwal at SmilesHUB may be the perfect solution.

All-on-X uses either four or six dental implants to support a set of permanent, fixed dentures in the upper, lower, or both arches of teeth. Compared to traditional dentures, All-on-X has a wide variety of benefits. Your new smile will last for decades, won’t shift when eating or chewing, and never has to be removed for oral hygiene or at night. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Have questions? Wondering if you’re a good candidate for this method of full mouth restoration?  Book a consultation at our office, or keep reading to learn more about this revolutionary method of permanent tooth replacement.

What Is All-on-X? Permanent Full-Arch Smile Replacement

All-on-X is a modern approach to full-mouth restoration that uses a set of either four (All-on-4) or six (All-on-Six) dental implants to support a fixed set of teeth in the upper, lower, or both arches of the jaw. Together, All-on-4 and All-on-6 are often referred to as “All-on-X.”

The All-on-X approach uses specially-designed implants that are placed into the mouth at precise angles. This maximizes their strength and ability to bond to the natural jawbone. In turn, this enhances strength and overall outcomes, and can even help patients with weaker jawbone tissue avoid bone grafting in some cases.

Compared to traditional dentures, All-on-X is very different. Traditional dentures are held in place primarily by friction, fitting tightly over your gums. And even with a great fit and the use of denture adhesive, traditional dentures can slip, shift, and move during your daily life. Dentures also must be removed for cleaning and must be soaked overnight when you go to sleep.

This is not the case with All-on-X. Your teeth are permanently attached to a set of implants, which are bonded directly to your jawbone. This means they’ll never shift or move. Unlike traditional dentures, there’s also no need to remove your teeth for oral hygiene or before sleep. This makes All-on-X much more convenient.

Understanding The Benefits of All-on-X

  • Natural, lifelike appearance – With All-on-X, you will get a set of fixed, permanent ceramic teeth that look much more realistic than traditional dentures. You’ll be able to smile proudly and love how you look once again, even if you've lost most or all of your natural teeth!
  • Improved ability to chew and speak – Unlike traditional dentures, All-on-X dentures will never move or shift when you speak, chew, or bite. This helps you feel more confident in your speech and allows you to enjoy all of your favorite foods, too!
  • Fewer implants required for full-arch replacement – All-on-4 is the most common type of All-on-X treatment, and uses just four implants to restore a full arch of upper or lower teeth. In contrast, other approaches to full-mouth implants may require six or even eight implants per arch, which adds cost and complexity to the procedure.

  • Same-day smile restoration – Because of the special design and placement of All-on-X, your implants will be strong enough to accommodate a temporary set of teeth, which you’ll get right after implant surgery. You’ll walk out of SmilesHUB with a brand-new smile!
  • Supports jawbone health – Like other types of dental implants, All-on-X implants stimulate your jawbone once they heal. This prevents bone loss, which is a common problem for patients with dentures. All-on-X helps you avoid the shrinking, “sunken” appearance that often occurs with long-term denture wear.
  • Long lifespan – All-on-X implants can last you for the rest of your life, and your fixed dentures will typically last 10-15 years or longer before requiring replacement. This means that All-on-X has a much longer lifespan than traditional dentures.

Breaking Down The All-on-X Procedure – Step By Step

Not sure what to expect from the process of getting All-on-X in Oakbrook Terrace, IL from SmilesHUB? We’re here to help. Here’s an overview of the steps that you’ll need to take to permanently restore your smile with All-on-X at our office.

Initial consultation and exam

First, you’ll come in for a visit with Dr. Ritu or Dr. Sushant. They will perform a comprehensive oral exam, take 3D images and X-rays of your smile, and discuss your past oral and overall health history to determine if you’re a good candidate for All-on-X. Your dentist from SmilesHUB will answer any questions you have about the All-on-X, as well as your dental implant alternatives like full and partial dentures and dental bridges.

Preparatory procedures (if needed)

In some cases, you may qualify for All-on-X but require further treatment before your smile reconstruction can begin. These procedures may include extractions to remove unhealthy teeth, alveoloplasty (bone ridge smoothing) to smooth out sockets after extraction, or bone grafting/sinus lifts to strengthen your jawbone for All-on-X implants.

Implant surgery and temporary teeth

Once it’s time for your All-on-X surgery, you’ll come into our office to get your set of four or six implants. Dr. Ritu or Dr. Sushant will clean and numb your mouth to ensure your comfort. We also offer a full suite of sedation options including minimal nitrous oxide, moderate oral conscious sedation, and deep IV sedation.

Then, your dentist will use surgical guides and 3D imaging to place each implant precisely in your mouth, maximizing their strength. Once all of your implants are in place, you’ll get a set of temporary teeth that you’ll wear as you heal. While not as strong or durable as your permanent set, these let you restore your smile immediately after your implant surgery.

Healing and regular checkups

Over the next 3-6 months, your dental implants will permanently bond (osseointegrate) with your jawbone. You will come in for regular checkups during this time. Dr. Ritu or Dr. Sushant will check on your healing progress and begin crafting your permanent set of ceramic All-on-X dentures.

Final All-On-X denture placement

Once your mouth has healed, you will come in for your final visit. Dr. Ritu or Dr. Sushant will remove your temporary teeth and double-check to make sure your final set of All-on-X dentures fits perfectly. Then, your new teeth will be permanently attached to your dental implants. The last step is to send you home with a set of instructions on how to care for your new smile.

All-On-X Costs – Considerations For Treatment Planning

All-on-X is a complex procedure, and the cost will vary depending on each patient’s specific needs. However, there’s no getting around the fact that replacing a full mouth of teeth with All-on-4 or All-on-6 will be quite a bit more expensive than getting a set of traditional dentures.

However, All-on-X is worth the investment. Compared to traditional dentures, All-on-X is more comfortable, durable, natural-looking, and longer-lasting. It also offers much better overall performance when chewing, eating, and speaking, and is simpler to care for, since there’s no need to remove your teeth to clean your mouth or when you go to sleep.

Dental insurance coverage and financing for All-on-X

While most dental insurance plans do not cover the cost of All-on-X treatment, your plan may contribute toward other necessary preparatory procedures like extractions. At SmilesHUB, we will work closely with you to maximize your benefits, and we accept most major insurance plans, including Delta Dental.

Maintaining Your Oral Health Post-Treatment – Tips & Advice

All-on-X is a big investment, but your new smile can last the rest of your life with proper care. And the good news? Caring for All-on-X is much easier than caring for a set of traditional dentures. Here are some of the steps that Dr. Sushant and Dr. Ritu will recommend that you follow:

  • Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle – You should eat a “tooth-healthy” diet that’s low in sugar and processed foods, and avoid lifestyle habits like smoking, vaping, or using any other type of tobacco or nicotine product.
  • Brush twice per day – Even though they're not natural teeth, your new smile will need to be brushed every day to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, and to keep your gums healthy. You should brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss underneath your teeth – Along with daily brushing, you will need to floss underneath your teeth, in the small gap between your gums and your dentures. Tools like SuperFLoss or a floss threader can make this easier, and Dr. Ritu or Dr. Sushant are happy to demonstrate proper techniques during your checkups.
  • Invest in a water flosser, too – A water flosser like a WaterPik can help blast away food particles from between your gums and your All-on-X dentures. Along with flossing, this is very helpful for keeping your gums healthy and free of food particles and bacteria.
  • See your dentist for six-month checkups – Routine six-month visits allow Dr. Sushant or Dr. Ritu to look for signs of peri-implantitis (gum infection around your implants), and ensure that your gums, implants, and All-on-4 dentures are all in good shape.

Answering Common FAQs About All-on-X

How long does All-on-X treatment take?

The process usually takes 4-7 months, and this does not include any necessary preparatory treatments like bone grafting or extractions. The good news? You can get a set of functional temporary teeth on the same day that you get your All-on-X implants, which ensures you can smile normally as you heal, recover, and prepare for your permanent set of fixed dentures.

Is All-on-X painful?

No. You will be safely sedated during your surgery for your comfort. You may experience a little bit of discomfort as you heal for the first few weeks, but this will be limited. Dr. Sushant or Dr. Ritu will provide you with a full set of instructions for managing the recovery process and ensuring your comfort.

Who is a good candidate for All-on-X?

‍As long as your mouth is healthy, you may qualify for All-on-X if you are suffering from extensive tooth loss or you currently wear a set of full-mouth traditional dentures. Even if your jawbone is weak due to tooth loss, we may be able to strengthen it with bone grafting to prepare for All-on-X treatment.

What’s the difference between All-on-X and traditional dentures?

All-on-X consists of a full set of upper or lower teeth that are attached securely to four or six dental implants. These teeth are made of ceramic materials and can only be removed by a dentist. In contrast, traditional dentures are held onto your gums by friction and denture adhesive. They tend to shift and move over time, and must be removed for cleaning and at night. All-on-X offers a much more convenient, long-lasting, and durable alternative to traditional dentures.

Is All-on-X the same as implant-supported dentures?

‍Not exactly. The biggest difference between these two types of full-mouth dental implants is that All-on-X dentures are permanently fixed in place, and are only removable by a dentist. Other types of implant-supported dentures can be removed at home for cleaning and overnight. They “snap” onto the dental implants, which is why they're sometimes called “snap-in” dentures. Both types of full-mouth restoration have pros and cons, so it’s best to ask Dr. Ritu or Dr. Sushant for more info during your visit!
